Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has stated that the recent mass defection of party leaders and state governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) validates his support for President Bola Tinubu. This statement was made during the flag-off of construction on the outer southern expressway in Abuja.
Wike highlighted that those who once criticized him for allegedly destabilizing the PDP are now part of the APC. He suggested that these governors should commend him for facilitating their transition to the ruling party, arguing that he has done a good job in paving the way for their defection.
The Minister’s comments come on the heels of significant defections, including that of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, who have both left the PDP for the APC. This shift has reduced the number of PDP governors from eleven to eight ahead of the upcoming 2027 elections.
Wike praised President Tinubu’s leadership, asserting that it has improved financial stability for states, allowing them to pay salaries and undertake projects without the previous struggles. He emphasized that no governor would leave debts for their successors under this administration, contrasting it with past practices.
He called for sincerity among governors and urged them to acknowledge the positive changes under Tinubu’s leadership, which he believes is essential for Nigeria’s progress.
