The Federal Government has announced the temporary closure of Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, Enugu State, for emergency repairs of the runway. This decision follows Air Peace’s suspension of flights to the airport due to safety concerns regarding the runway condition.
Dr. Ejike Ndiulo, Head of Corporate Communications for Air Peace, confirmed that safety issues had been causing significant disruptions. In a statement, he expressed regret over the flight suspension, emphasizing the airline’s commitment to prioritizing safety over convenience.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) also reported a sudden rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway. Scheduled emergency repairs will take place from April 22nd to May 6th, 2025, during which the runway will remain closed to all landings and takeoffs.
Passengers are advised that all flights to and from Enugu will be diverted to Asaba Airport during the shutdown. FAAN has apologized for the late notice and appeals for understanding from all airport users and stakeholders during this period.
