The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a group life insurance scheme for federal government officials, civil servants, and workers in federal ministries and treasury-funded agencies. The approval was granted during a meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

The scheme, announced by the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Esther Walson-Jack, will cover high-ranking government officials, including the President, Vice President, Chief of Staff, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, ministers, permanent secretaries, and employees of federal government ministries. It will also extend to paramilitary agencies, such as the Nigerian Immigration Service, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, the Nigeria Correctional Service, and others.

This life insurance policy is intended to provide financial assistance to the families of federal public servants in the event of their death. Walson-Jack emphasized that the initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to the welfare of civil servants. Under the scheme, the government has taken out a life policy on each public servant, ensuring that their next of kin receives benefits to help support the family during such a loss.

The scheme, which is an annual policy, will cover the 2025/2026 policy year, with premiums paid to insurance underwriters for 12 months. However, Walson-Jack noted that the policy would expire at the end of 2026. To raise awareness of the program, her office plans to launch a sensitization campaign to ensure that more public servants are informed about the scheme.
