Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, has been detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and is expected to spend the night in custody as investigations continue.

El-Rufai reportedly presented himself at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on Monday after being invited for questioning over alleged financial improprieties linked to his tenure as governor between 2015 and 2023.

A source within the commission confirmed that the former governor remains in custody and may be released on Tuesday, depending on the outcome of further interrogation.

The detention comes amid ongoing scrutiny following allegations raised by the Kaduna State House of Assembly in 2024 over the alleged diversion of N423 billion in public funds and money laundering.

El-Rufai has also been invited by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and is expected to face further questioning later in the week.

Last week, security operatives had attempted to arrest him at the Abuja airport shortly after his return from Cairo, Egypt, an incident that sparked public attention and controversy.

Meanwhile, investigations by anti-graft and security agencies are said to be widening as authorities intensify efforts to probe claims surrounding his administration.
