At least eight people have been reported dead following an explosion caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) in Niger State.
The incident occurred after suspected terrorists planted explosives along a bridge on Luma Road in Borgu Local Government Area, a key route linking Luma, Babana, and Agwara communities. The bridge is known to serve traders and commuters, especially those heading to the popular Babana border market.
According to reports, the attackers initially destroyed the bridge using an IED during the early hours of Monday. Hours later, a vehicle travelling between Nuku and Woro unknowingly ran over another explosive device in the same area. The resulting blast killed all eight occupants, including the driver.
The Niger State Police Command confirmed the development, noting that security operatives have since launched clearance and monitoring operations around the affected area.
Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun stated that the bridge had already been damaged before the fatal explosion involving the vehicle. He added that efforts are ongoing to secure the area and prevent further attacks.
Authorities continue to intensify operations in the region as concerns grow over recurring attacks on critical infrastructure and civilian movement routes.
