The All Progressives Congress (APC) has ignited fresh political controversy by calling for the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), escalating tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru, speaking on Arise Television, argued that Nigeria’s ballot papers should not be “cluttered with irrelevant and unviable parties,” insisting that the ADC has failed to meet constitutional thresholds for political relevance.

Basiru dismissed concerns about a looming one-party state, noting that Nigeria still has multiple registered parties, even though many lack electoral strength. He maintained that the APC’s demand is rooted in strict compliance with constitutional provisions, not political intimidation.

In a sharp jab, the APC scribe described the ADC as a “coalition of confusion,” accusing it of making more noise than meaningful political impact. He further revealed that legal actions are already underway seeking the party’s deregistration, urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to act decisively.

The call has intensified the political battle between the ruling party and opposition forces, raising fresh concerns about political space, electoral fairness, and the future of multiparty democracy in Nigeria.
