Media entrepreneur and PDP chieftain Dele Momodu has called on the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). In a post on his X (formerly Twitter), Momodu urged the government to confront the root causes of separatist agitation in the South-East.
Accompanying his statement was a clip of Kanu’s broadcast made shortly before his repatriation from Kenya, where he discussed the reasons behind the Biafran movement. Momodu attributed the resurgence of this agitation to “decades of marginalisation and deprivation” faced by the Igbo people.
He criticized those condemning Kanu without understanding the historical context, saying many jump to conclusions without analyzing the past injustices that have fueled the current sentiments.
Momodu warned that attempts to silence Kanu would not resolve the agitation, arguing that the Igbo struggle requires political solutions rather than legal or military ones. He emphasized that the government should engage constructively with the South-East, stating, “I will never support violence.”
His comments come amid renewed calls from political leaders and civil rights groups for Kanu’s release and a political resolution to the ongoing conflict in the region.
