Defections Won’t End Opposition Politics – Ben Murray-Bruce

Former Senator and media mogul Ben Murray-Bruce has asserted that the recent wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) does not signal the end of opposition politics in Nigeria. He emphasized that new challengers will always emerge in the country’s democratic landscape.

In an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, following his own defection to the APC, Murray-Bruce responded to the recent exits of PDP governors, including Douye Diri of Bayelsa State and Peter Mbah of Enugu State. He asserted that the decline of the PDP should not be conflated with the demise of democracy.

“Things get destroyed for others to show up. There will be other parties. It may not be called PDP, but there will be opposition,” he stated. Murray-Bruce expressed confidence that Nigeria’s political environment will continue to foster alternative forces to challenge the ruling party.

He dismissed concerns that the defections could lead to a one-party state, insisting that while the PDP may be struggling, the democratic process remains intact. He highlighted key political figures who could continue to play significant roles, asserting, “Peter Obi is not dead. Kwankwaso is not dead. Atiku is not dead, so there will be opposition.”
