In a dramatic turn of events, notorious bandit leader Bello Turji was branded a coward after fleeing a fierce military operation, leaving his own son behind to face the Nigerian military’s firepower. The Defence Headquarters reported that during a recent offensive dubbed “Operation Fansan Yamma,” Turji and his loyal combatants were targeted in a coordinated assault across the Shinkafi, Kagara, and Fakai axes.

For years, Turji has instilled fear in North Western Nigeria, leading attacks that have resulted in countless deaths and mass abductions. However, his bravado crumbled under the pressure of the military’s relentless advance. On January 17, 2025, troops engaged in a fierce battle at the Fakai high ground, where they killed Turji’s son and many of his followers.

Major General Edward Buba, the outgoing Director of Media Operations, condemned Turji’s actions, stating, “In a gross cowardly act, he escaped, abandoning his son and combatants.” While the military unleashed devastating firepower, they also managed to rescue several hostages previously held captive by the bandit kingpin.

The operation did not stop there. In a subsequent raid on a camp linked to another notorious terrorist, Idi Mallam, troops neutralized three terrorists and arrested three suspected accomplices, recovering a cache of weapons and livestock along the way.

As the military continues its onslaught against these terror groups, Turji’s flight highlights the unraveling of his once-feared empire. The Nigerian military remains committed to restoring peace and safety, demonstrating that even the most dreaded criminals can be brought to justice.
