Residents of Borno State are in a state of confusion after President Bola Tinubu commissioned 3,000 electric bikes during a recent visit, despite an ongoing ban on the use of motorcycles in the state. The inauguration included not only electric bikes but also 500 tricycles, 100 cars, and 20 buses.

President Tinubu praised Borno Governor Babagana Zulum and the state’s residents, emphasizing that the initiative would enhance mobility, particularly in rural areas. However, a police ban on all motorcycles, including electric ones, has been enforced since July 2024 due to security concerns. Police have warned that anyone found using these bikes would be arrested.

ASP Nahum Daso, the police spokesperson, reiterated that the ban remains in effect, and currently, no exceptions have been made. Meanwhile, Abdulrahman Bundi, a senior technical assistant to the governor, confirmed that the public should defer to the police regarding the enforcement of the ban.

The commissioning has led to widespread confusion among residents, who are seeking clarification from the state government. Many residents expressed their concerns, questioning how the government plans to implement the electric bike program while the ban is still in force. Some appreciated the initiative but called for official communication regarding its implementation.

Calls for clarity continue as citizens seek to understand if the ban has been lifted or if the bikes will be designated for specific users.
