The recent violence in Yelwa community, Benue State, has resulted in the displacement of no fewer than 3,160 individuals, according to the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda. Speaking during an interview on Arise News’ Morning Show, he detailed the aftermath of the attacks, which included the destruction of approximately 48 homes, shops, and business centers.
Among the displaced individuals, 810 are school-age children, highlighting the devastating impact on families and the community’s future. Yilwatda emphasized that his ministry, in collaboration with state authorities and international partners, conducted a comprehensive needs assessment in the affected area.
The minister announced that the estimated budget for the intervention in the community stands at N6.7 billion. This budget aims to address immediate relief efforts, peacebuilding initiatives, and long-term solutions for the displaced families. He noted that the European Union has committed €1.5 million (around N2.7 billion) towards this initiative, with additional contributions expected from NGOs, the state government, and the federal government.
Yilwatda outlined that the intervention would not only provide immediate assistance but also focus on rebuilding homes, restoring livelihoods, and ensuring that children return to school. He mentioned that similar efforts are being implemented in other states, including Borno and Niger, where communities are also grappling with the repercussions of violence, flooding, and malnutrition.
The minister attributed some of the ongoing challenges to climate change, natural disasters, and insurgency, asserting that a comprehensive and sustainable response is essential.
As the situation in Benue unfolds, the government’s commitment to addressing the humanitarian crisis remains crucial for the affected communities.
