In a significant political shift, supporters of former Sokoto State governor Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa have officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This decision was reached during a recent consultative meeting that brought together leaders from all 23 local government areas of Sokoto State.

The chairman of the Bafarawa Akida Movement, Prof. Hamza Maishanu, explained that their defection reflects the collective will of the members and comes in the wake of internal crises within the PDP. After resigning from the party, the group chose to adopt a new identity that symbolizes loyalty to Bafarawa’s values, emphasizing principles such as justice, honesty, and transparency in governance.

The recent political realignments prompted the movement to seek clarity on its path forward. Following extensive discussions, the elders unanimously decided to support the administration of Governor Ahmed Aliyu, highlighting the governor’s performance and the respectful relationship he maintains with Bafarawa.

Maishanu confirmed that this endorsement signifies their formal transition to the APC, where they intend to collaborate with the state government on its developmental agenda. He dismissed claims that their decision was influenced by external pressures or upcoming elections, asserting that their choice is solely based on an assessment of state governance.

While Bafarawa has expressed support for his followers’ decision, he clarified that he has stepped back from active politics. He remains committed to supporting the state governor, emphasizing the importance of respecting his supporters’ rights to political association.

This defection marks a pivotal moment in Sokoto’s political landscape, showcasing how parties and their affiliations can evolve in response to governance challenges and leadership dynamics.
