The Anambra State Government has dismantled a notorious baby factory posing as a hospital in Umunya, Oyi Local Government Area, during a sting operation aimed at combating human trafficking. The facility, known as “Mother and Child Hospital and Maternity,” was sealed on Saturday following months of surveillance and intelligence gathering.

The raid, conducted by officials from the Ministry of Health in collaboration with security agencies, led to the arrest of key staff members and operatives, including five pregnant women and ten other individuals. It was revealed that the facility was engaged in medical malpractices and was operating under a falsified license, owned by a self-proclaimed medical doctor from Delta State.

Dr. Afam Obidike, the state Commissioner for Health, confirmed that the syndicate was involved in trafficking and exploiting young girls aged between 15 and 21. Many victims were reportedly held against their will and forced into pregnancies, with newborns being sold into illegal adoption rings.

“This crackdown is a significant victory in the ongoing battle against child trafficking, human rights violations, and gender-based abuse,” said Obidike. He emphasized the government’s commitment to shutting down illegal medical establishments and ensuring public health safety.

The commissioner highlighted the importance of collaboration between security agencies and health regulators, stating, “We are determined to rid Anambra State of fake medical practitioners and criminal networks that exploit the vulnerable.”

Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation, and suspects are expected to face charges including human trafficking, unlawful detention, and child exploitation. The state health ministry has urged the public to report suspicious healthcare practices.

Several teenage girls and infants rescued during the raid are now receiving comprehensive medical care and psychological support. The government has issued a stern warning to operators of unlicensed facilities, affirming that they will face severe consequences if they do not cease their activities.
