Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has condemned the federal government under President Bola Tinubu following deadly bomb blasts in Maiduguri that killed at least 23 people and injured over 100. The explosions struck a busy market, the entrance to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office flyover, plunging the city into mourning and prompting sharp criticism of the administration’s handling of security.
In a statement released by his media office, Amaechi labelled the government “abysmally incompetent,” accusing it of failing in its primary duty to protect lives and property. He said the attacks expose a leadership he described as complacent and disconnected from the suffering of ordinary Nigerians, and argued that frequent official statements have not been matched by meaningful action to halt recurring violence.
Amaechi warned that insecurity has become an everyday reality for many citizens while those in power continue to live lavishly without decisive responses. He urged that continued inaction will drive public demands for accountability and insisted that leadership must be measured by responsibility and sustained, effective interventions rather than rhetoric.
Condoling with the victims and the people of Borno State, Amaechi went further to call on the president to resign, asserting that any government unable to guarantee safety, peace and dignity for its people has failed in its constitutional duty.
