The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has demanded the immediate removal of the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, following allegations linking him to banditry.

Describing the claims as “shocking and deeply troubling,” the association said Nigerians deserve transparency and accountability in how the matter is handled.

In a statement signed by the President of the NANS Headquarters Senate, Usman Adamu Nagwaza, on Monday, the student body said it remains committed to fighting corruption and ensuring that public officials are held responsible for their actions.

NANS stressed that the public must be protected from abuse of power, expressing concern over Matawalle’s alleged relationship with bandits, which it described as a serious breach of trust that calls into question his integrity and suitability to remain in office.

According to the association, the allegations are particularly disturbing given Matawalle’s role as Minister of State for Defence, a position central to the nation’s fight against insecurity.

“His alleged relationship with bandits is a betrayal of the trust reposed in him by the Nigerian people and undermines the government’s efforts to combat insecurity,” the statement read.

NANS demanded that Matawalle be removed from office pending a full investigation, insisting that such action is necessary to ensure a fair and unhindered inquiry, prevent further damage to national security, and restore public confidence.

The student body warned that any perceived ties between a senior government official and criminal elements could embolden banditry and worsen the displacement of innocent Nigerians.

It also issued a one-week ultimatum to the Federal Government, threatening to mobilise students nationwide to block major highways if the demand is not met.

NANS further urged President Bola Tinubu to act decisively, warning that Nigerians would not tolerate corruption or any form of complicity with terrorists.

“It is essential that the government takes decisive action to address these allegations. The rule of law must be upheld, and all wrongdoing punished,” the association stated.
