A passenger train traveling from Abuja to Kaduna on Tuesday morning derailed, leaving scores of commuters stranded and sparking panic along the troubled railway corridor.
The incident occurred at Asham, shortly after the train departed Abuja around 9:45 a.m. Eyewitnesses said several coaches toppled, forcing terrified passengers to scramble for safety amid confusion.
Although the exact cause of the derailment is yet to be established, emergency teams and military personnel have been dispatched to the scene to assist in evacuation and maintain order.
Images circulating on social media showed at least three carriages lying off the tracks near Jere station.
Speaking on the development, the spokesman of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ezekiel Manzo, confirmed the incident but said casualties could not yet be ascertained. He added that NEMA officials were already en route to the accident site.
The Abuja–Kaduna rail line, a major transit route connecting the nation’s capital to the North, has witnessed frequent disruptions in recent months, including last week’s service breakdown linked to axle faults.
