A faction of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization Afenifere has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, claiming that his “renewed hope” agenda has devolved into a nightmare for Nigerians over the past two years. In a mid-term report, Afenifere’s leaders accused the Tinubu administration of engaging in “massive propaganda” that falsely claims success.
The report highlights a significant decline in domestic production, an alarming rise in public debt, and a severe increase in poverty under Tinubu’s leadership. Afenifere described the current government as “unabashedly profligate,” serving primarily the privileged and connected.
The group asserted that every human development and socio-political index has regressed since Tinubu took office, transforming the promise of renewed hope into despair. Instead of taking responsibility for the hardships faced by Nigerians, the administration has resorted to blaming global and historical factors while showing little empathy for the populace.
Afenifere emphasized the detrimental impact of Tinubu’s economic reforms, which they argue have backfired. The failure to implement the Oronsaye Report aimed at reducing governance costs has resulted in increased expenditures, including luxury items for government officials.
The faction accused Tinubu of undermining democratic federalism, pushing Nigeria toward a one-party state. They expressed concern over the administration’s centralizing tendencies, which they believe weaken the pillars of democracy, such as the legislature and judiciary.
The report also noted an increase in the intolerance of dissent, with peaceful protesters and civic groups facing harassment. Afenifere highlighted the troubling trend of opposition politicians defecting to the ruling party to escape institutional victimization, suggesting government-sponsored conflicts within opposition groups.
In conclusion, Afenifere called for a change in Tinubu’s approach, urging him to prioritize the welfare of Nigerians over political ambitions. They reiterated that no amount of propaganda can mask the hunger and poverty afflicting the nation.
