Governor Hyacinth Alia has raised the alarm over worsening insecurity in Benue State, describing the current situation as a full-blown siege by violent invaders. Speaking during a Mass at the Chapel of Grace within the Government House in Makurdi, the governor called on residents to take an active role in safeguarding the state by reporting suspicious activity to security agencies.
“We are under siege as a state. We are under attack,” Alia declared. “Those who are attacking us have a face, a mission, and a drive — they kill to occupy. This is extremely unacceptable.”
The governor, who had earlier called for full federal assistance to confront the crisis, emphasized the need for a collective security approach. “If you hear something, say something,” he urged, adding that swift information sharing could help security operatives respond effectively.
Alia warned political actors against exploiting the situation for personal or partisan gain. “I invite you politicians to stay clear. Don’t be part of those who are attacking us,” he cautioned, stating that mechanisms are in place to identify those involved in undermining the state’s peace.
Condemning all forms of criminality regardless of ethnic or religious background, the governor stated firmly, “A terrorist is a terrorist. Criminality is criminality. Whoever commits it should not be among the living.”
He further called on the people of Benue not to be discouraged by the attacks, promising that his administration would go to any length to restore peace and protect lives.
Reflecting on the recent Easter celebrations, Alia appealed for prayers for victims of recent killings in Ukum and Logo Local Government Areas, describing their deaths as gruesome and tragic.
