Recent developments in Rivers State have triggered significant unrest, with various groups, particularly the Ijaw National Congress (INC), voicing their strong support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara against alleged attempts to remove him from office. The INC is urging the Federal Government to intervene to prevent further political instability in the oil-rich region.

In an interview with Arise Television, Professor Benjamin Okaba, the president of the INC, called on Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike to allow Governor Fubara to focus on his duties. He also urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to rein in Wike, expressing concern over potential disaster if these political maneuvers continue.

Tensions escalated on Wednesday when Governor Fubara was barred from entering the Rivers State House of Assembly to present the 2025 budget. The lawmakers, who are loyal to Wike, locked the gates of the Assembly, leading to accusations of political maneuvering and a disregard for due process.

“Ijaw nation will not accept any attempts to undermine our governor,” Professor Okaba declared, emphasizing that Fubara was elected by the people and deserves access to the Assembly. He warned that any aggression against the governor could be met with resistance from the Ijaw people.

The actions of the Assembly have been described as an insult not just to Fubara, but to the entire population of Rivers State. An elder statesman and member of the Rivers State Elders and Leaders Forum, Anabs Sara-Igbe, condemned the lawmakers’ behavior as not only provocative but detrimental to the governance of the state.

Sara-Igbe pointed out that denying Fubara access to the Assembly is indicative of deeper political strife in Rivers State and could threaten peace and stability in the broader Niger Delta region.

Additionally, Sara-Igbe criticized Wike’s derogatory comments about the Ijaw people and reminded him of the historical consequences of political unrest in the area, especially in times of economic struggle.

The youth arm of the Ijaw community, through the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), also issued warnings against attempts to remove Fubara, stating that forceful action would lead to significant disruptions, including the shutdown of flow stations across the Niger Delta.

Rivers State is a critical player in Nigeria’s oil industry, serving as a hub for major oil companies and contributing significantly to national revenue. Observers stress that any political turmoil in the state could have dire implications for oil production and the economy at large, making stability imperative.

As political tensions simmer, the response of the Rivers State House of Assembly will be crucial, with legal experts suggesting that a compromise is necessary for resolution. Some lawmakers are seeking to investigate the chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), highlighting ongoing complexities in the political landscape.

The situation remains fluid, with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) monitoring developments and affirming its support for Governor Fubara. The party is preparing to respond to the evolving crisis, emphasizing the importance of unity in governance and support for elected officials.

The unfolding drama in Rivers State reflects broader themes of political integrity, governance, and the importance of peaceful dialogue in Nigeria’s democratic process. As stakeholders continue to advocate for peace, eyes remain on the actions of all parties involved.
