The United States has initiated deportation proceedings for Nigerian nationals, with 85 individuals expected to arrive in Lagos on Monday. This action is part of a broader immigration enforcement strategy, with 116 others still in custody.

The first group of deportees will primarily consist of individuals who have served prison sentences in the US for various crimes, including violations of immigration laws. These individuals had previously appealed their deportation orders but were denied.

Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, expressed concerns regarding the emotional and financial impact of these deportations on the affected individuals and their families in Nigeria. She emphasized the need for a humane approach to the repatriation process, advocating for adherence to international guidelines.

Approximately 201 Nigerian nationals are currently detained in US immigration facilities, with 85 cleared for deportation. The Nigerian government seeks assurances that deportees will be treated with dignity and given adequate time to manage their affairs before being repatriated.

There is particular concern about the potential trauma faced by deportees, especially those who have not committed violent crimes. The government is calling for a more compassionate approach to the deportation process, ensuring families are not abruptly separated and that individuals can handle their assets before leaving the US.

This situation highlights ongoing challenges in immigration policy and the impact of deportations on families and communities.
