The national power grid in Nigeria experienced a significant collapse, plunging many Nigerians into darkness on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. Reports indicate that the grid lost power generation shortly after 11 a.m., resulting in widespread outages across the country.
Sources from various power generation companies confirmed a general disturbance in the grid around that time. According to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, a system disturbance occurred at 11:34 a.m., leading to the outage. They announced that power restoration efforts were underway, working closely with relevant stakeholders to stabilize the grid.
Before the collapse, the national grid was generating approximately 4,064 megawatts of electricity at 11 a.m., but this plummeted to just 1,203 megawatts by noon and zero at 1 p.m. This marks one of the first grid collapses in 2025, following a line tripping incident in January, and reflects a troubling trend, as the grid collapsed 12 times in 2024 alone.
The spokesperson for the Transmission Company of Nigeria, Ndidi Mbah, has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the incident, citing her attendance at a function. However, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company continued to update customers on their social media channels, expressing regret for the inconvenience and assuring them that gradual restoration of power supply had begun.
