February 6, 2025 – The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review has proposed the creation of 31 new states in Nigeria. If approved, this would bring the total number of states in the country to 67.

The proposal was presented during a plenary session by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who chaired the committee. The proposed new states include:

  • North Central: 6 new states
  • North East: 4 new states
  • North West: 5 new states
  • South East: 5 new states
  • South South: 4 new states
  • South West: 7 new states

The letter outlining the proposal detailed specific requirements for initiating the state creation process, including:

  1. An act of the National Assembly must receive support from at least two-thirds of its members.
  2. Local government councils and state assemblies must endorse the proposal.

The proposed new states include names such as Okun, Okura, and Confluence from Kogi; FCT; Amana from Adamawa; New Kaduna and Gujarat from Kaduna State, among others.

The committee emphasized adherence to constitutional guidelines in the submission of proposals and stated that all submissions must include both hard and electronic copies.

This significant proposal is set to reshape Nigeria’s administrative landscape, pending further discussions and approvals.
