The Federal Government of Nigeria has allocated N4 billion for conditional cash transfers aimed at supporting vulnerable households across the country. This initiative, announced by Professor Nentawe Yilwada, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, seeks to address the pressing humanitarian crisis affecting millions of displaced families.

This initiative is set to provide aid to approximately 10 million displaced families, focusing particularly on those in the Northeast region, where the humanitarian crisis is most acute. The cash transfer program is expected to commence in February and run through April, addressing the immediate needs of families affected by displacement.

In addition to the cash transfers, the government has also approved N2 billion in interest-free loans for farmers in rural areas, aimed at enhancing food production and self-sufficiency. The loans, which will range from N300,000 to N400,000 per household, are designed to provide farmers with essential resources and access to market opportunities.

“Our priority is to support women, especially widows, pregnant women, and individuals with disabilities,” stated Professor Yilwada, highlighting the unique challenges faced by displaced women. “The experiences of these vulnerable groups are particularly difficult, and we are committed to providing ongoing assistance.”

The government’s broader strategy includes provisions for cash transfers to families impacted by natural disasters and other crises, totaling N4 billion. This is part of a concerted effort to alleviate poverty and offer timely relief to those in urgent need.

Professor Yilwada emphasized the government’s dedication to addressing the needs of internally displaced persons, returnees, and affected communities nationwide. The Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan was developed through extensive consultations and aims to tackle the humanitarian challenges in conflict-affected states such as Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe.

“We are integrating humanitarian, developmental, and peacebuilding efforts to foster long-term resilience and sustainable solutions for these communities,” he concluded.
