A devastating fire in Abuja has resulted in the deaths of a 24-year-old woman, Jumai Sunday, and her one-year-six-month-old son, Nasir Rabiu. Both victims were reportedly residents of Eggon Local Government Area in Nasarawa State.
The tragic incident occurred at a residence within the Kugbo furniture market in the Municipal Area Council (AMAC) of the Federal Capital Territory. Eyewitnesses reported that the fire broke out while the mother and son were asleep on the night of January 8, 2025.
Their charred remains were later discovered by neighbors and sympathizers who were helping to sort through the aftermath once firefighters had managed to extinguish the flames.
Lakur Langyi, the police officer in charge of the Karu division in Abuja, confirmed the incident. He stated that his team received distress calls around midnight and promptly arrived at the scene, where they found the bodies of Jumai and her son. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and an investigation has been launched.
Langyi remarked, “Yes, there was a fire incident in Kugbo at a place called Bakasi. My men got distress calls at midnight on Wednesday and moved to the area, where they discovered the woman and her child burnt to death.” He added that the investigation is ongoing.
The victims have since been laid to rest at Kugbo cemetery, located off the Abuja-Nyanya-Keffi Expressway.
