No fewer than 27 members of the House of Representatives have defected from their political parties to the All Progressives Congress and the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The defections were announced during plenary presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who noted the growing wave of political realignments within the chamber.

According to the breakdown, the APC gained 14 new members while also losing two lawmakers to opposition parties. The development has further strengthened the ruling party’s numbers in the House.

The Speaker expressed concern over the movement of lawmakers across parties but proceeded to formally acknowledge the changes on the floor of the House.

Among the defectors was Deputy Minority Whip George Ozodinobi, who led a group of lawmakers from the Labour Party to the ADC, citing internal crisis within his former party.

Others who moved to the ADC also pointed to ongoing leadership disputes and divisions in their previous parties as reasons for their decisions.

Some lawmakers defected to the APC from the Peoples Democratic Party and the New Nigeria People’s Party, while others switched between smaller political parties.

With the latest defections, the APC’s strength in the Green Chamber has risen significantly, consolidating its majority position ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The development reflects the continued reshaping of Nigeria’s political landscape as parties reposition themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
