Anambra State Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo has publicly declared his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for a second term in the 2027 presidential election, and says the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) will not field its own presidential candidate. Speaking in a television interview in Awka, Soludo described Tinubu as a friend and trusted ally and urged other potential presidential hopefuls to rethink their ambitions in light of his endorsement.
Soludo stressed that his position is deliberate and unapologetic. He framed the move as consistent with APGA’s earlier strategy in 2023, when the party chose not to present a presidential candidate and instead backed the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). According to the governor, the decision should be understood not as a betrayal of party principles but as a calculated collaboration aimed at promoting effective governance and regional development.
Highlighting the working relationship between his administration and the federal government, Soludo said President Tinubu has provided tangible support to Anambra State since taking office in 2023. He argued that APGA’s priority is to consolidate its influence at state and regional levels while aligning with a national leader it believes can deliver concrete results for Nigerians.
Soludo’s announcement signals a strategic posture for APGA ahead of the 2027 polls: focus on strengthening the party’s local and regional power base, avoid a fractious presidential contest, and back a candidate perceived as capable of steering national progress. The governor’s comments are likely to shape conversations within the South-East political landscape and among opposition groups weighing their options for next year’s election.
