Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has strongly condemned the reported assault on women and girls during the Alue-Do cultural festival held in Ozoro, Delta State.

In a statement released on Sunday, the First Lady described the incident as deeply disturbing, following the circulation of viral footage showing women being harassed and subjected to degrading treatment during what was meant to be a cultural celebration.

She commended the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force for making arrests so far, while urging authorities to ensure that all those involved are fully prosecuted.

According to her, no cultural or traditional practice should ever be used as a justification for violating the dignity and rights of women and girls.

Addressing the victims, she encouraged them to seek proper medical care and psychological support, while offering prayers for their healing and recovery during what she described as a difficult time.

In a related message marking World Water Day 2026, Mrs. Tinubu highlighted the important role women play in society and emphasized the connection between access to clean water and gender equality.

She noted that in many communities, women and girls bear the burden of sourcing water, often at the expense of their education and economic opportunities. Ensuring access to safe and clean water, she said, would not only improve health outcomes but also empower women and support broader social development.

The First Lady called for collective efforts to promote equality, stressing that improving access to water is key to building stronger and more inclusive communities.
