Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration in Edo State is experiencing a significant shake-up as multiple political appointees have tendered their resignations to pursue elective positions in the 2027 general elections. The exodus follows a directive issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, requiring all appointees and civil servants with political ambitions to step down immediately.

The circular, dated February 28, 2026, and made public on March 2, has triggered a mass departure of key officials from the administration. Among the prominent resignations are Dr. Washington Osifo, Commissioner for Water Resources and Sanitation, Dr. Lucky Eseigbe, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Barrister Peter Uwadiae-Igbinigie, State Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Pius Alile, Deputy Chief of Staff to Deputy Governor Hon. Dennis Idahosa.

In their resignation letters addressed to Ikhilor, the officials cited their compliance with the newly enacted Electoral Act 2026, which mandates that holders of executive positions must relinquish their appointments before contesting elections. Dr. Osifo indicated his intention to run for the House of Representatives seat representing Orhionmwon/Uhumwonde Federal Constituency, currently held by Chief Billy Osawaru, who is seeking reelection.

Pius Alile, whose resignation took effect on February 27, announced his bid for the Egor/Ikpoba Khai constituency. The seat is presently occupied by Hon. Omoruyi Murphy Osaro, who recently defected from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Meanwhile, Dr. Eseigbe revealed plans to contest for the Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben Federal Constituency.

Barrister Uwadiae-Igbinigie stepped down from his role as Special Adviser on Political Party Affairs to compete in the APC state congress scheduled for March 3, 2026, aiming to retain his position as Publicity Secretary. The resignations underscore the competitive nature of the upcoming elections and the strict adherence to electoral regulations requiring officeholders to vacate their positions before pursuing political ambitions. As the political landscape in Edo State evolves, these developments signal intense preparations for the 2027 polls.
