The Plateau State Government convened an emergency security council meeting in response to a series of violent incidents that have caused numerous fatalities and injuries in Jos and surrounding areas. The meeting, led by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, included the Deputy Governor, senior government officials, and heads of security agencies.
Governor Mutfwang expressed condolences to the families of victims, labeling many deaths as preventable. He stressed the need for a review of recent security events, including a mining-related incident in Wase Local Government Area, and committed to implementing measures to avoid future occurrences.
The governor condemned unlawful attacks on travelers and communities, asserting that the government will hold communities accountable for any harm done to individuals in transit. He clarified that only authorized law enforcement agencies would be permitted to set up roadblocks, warning against unauthorized ones.
In addressing misinformation, Governor Mutfwang urged caution against the use of social media to incite violence, stating that actions would be taken against those spreading false information. He acknowledged the restraint shown by the youth in the state during provocations.
Police Commissioner Bassey Ewah reported that security agencies are employing both aggressive and preventative strategies to restore public confidence and ensure safety. He reassured residents that efforts are underway to track down offenders behind recent attacks, emphasizing a coordinated approach to maintaining peace in Plateau State.
