The Nigeria Police Force in Ondo State has advised religious leaders across the state to suspend night services due to prevailing security challenges.

The Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, gave the advice in Akure while addressing journalists on the recent abduction of six members of the Celestial Church in Uso.

The victims were kidnapped on February 25 during a midnight service at a church located along the Uso/Owo Expressway in Owo Local Government Area. One worshipper was rescued and one informant was arrested following the incident. The kidnappers were said to have demanded a ransom of N100 million.

According to the police commissioner, the victims included pregnant women and one physically challenged person.

Lawal explained that it is easier for the police to monitor religious activities during the daytime than at night. He said religious leaders should always inform security agencies before holding special programmes so that appropriate advice and support can be provided.

He noted that in the recent case, the police were not informed of any planned activity at the church.

The commissioner stated that a directive has been sent to all area commanders advising Muslim, Christian, and traditional worship leaders to suspend night worship for the time being due to security concerns.
