Contrary to the official explanation that former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, stepped down for family reasons, sources within the presidency have indicated that he was asked to resign by President Bola Tinubu.
Egbetokun resigned on February 24, 2026, following discussions with the president. While the presidency publicly maintained that his decision was based on personal and family considerations, insiders disclosed that the resignation was at the president’s request.
According to the sources, the move was influenced by concerns considered central to the administration’s security objectives. Though specific details were not officially outlined, the decision was said to be part of broader efforts to reposition the Nigeria Police Force.
Following his exit, President Tinubu appointed Olatunji Disu, an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, as Acting Inspector-General.
The leadership change has generated conversation within security and political circles as the government seeks to strengthen its approach to national security challenges.
