The Kano State Government has announced the shutdown of all entertainment centres for the duration of Ramadan. This directive, effective from February 18, 2026, was issued by Abdullahi Sulaiman, Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Censorship Board.
The closure applies to entertainment venues, known as gala houses, and disc jockey (DJ) operators under the board’s jurisdiction. It will commence at 10:00 p.m. on the day of the announcement and will remain in effect until the conclusion of the holy month.
Sulaiman stated that this measure is intended to foster a peaceful and morally conducive environment for Muslims observing the fast, free from distractions. All entertainment activities monitored by the board will be suspended throughout Ramadan, with details for reopening announced later, especially for Eid celebrations.
The board stressed that this closure does not extend to event centres used for weddings, conferences, or political gatherings. Compliance is mandatory, and enforcement teams will be monitoring adherence; violations could result in penalties.
While some residents express mixed feelings about the closure, the board reiterated that only venues classified as entertainment outlets are directly affected.
