The Edo State High Court has ordered the remand of several youths involved in protests over insecurity in the Ekpoma area at the Ubiaja Correctional Centre. This decision follows a prosecution request for a 14-day remand period. During the court proceedings, emotions ran high as relatives of the arrested protesters were seen weeping as their loved ones were taken away in a police vehicle.

The protests erupted last weekend in response to escalating incidents of kidnapping and insecurity in the Esan West Local Government Area. A viral video captured the unrest, revealing residents expressing their frustrations, while suspected cattle breeders fled the scene upon seeing the protestors.

The Edo State Police claimed they acted swiftly to restore peace when the protest became chaotic. They reported that the protest was initially peaceful but was “hijacked,” resulting in vandalism and violence. The police statement emphasized that: “Regrettably, the protest was hijacked, leading to incidents, including malicious damages and looting.” Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, deployed additional tactical forces to the area to control the situation and ensure public safety. He assured that those responsible for violence would be identified and held accountable.

During the protest, a 32-year-old man, Osagie Abraham, sustained a gunshot wound. The police confirmed that he is receiving medical treatment, and an investigation into the shooting is underway.

Concerns about security remain high among residents, with some accusing herders of involvement in violent activities. Aigbokhan Oseremen, Convener of the Esan Worldwide Community, called for stricter regulations on outsiders settling in local communities, stating that: “There should be a permit for anybody to reside in our villages or bushes.” Edo State government officials have responded that they are implementing technology-driven strategies to address the security challenges.

Governor Monday Okpebholo has reassured the public of ongoing efforts to improve security, stating: “This administration will not allow criminals or their sponsors to take Edo State hostage.” The governor emphasized the importance of community cooperation in combating crime, encouraging residents to report suspicious activities to law enforcement.
