The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has stated that former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello remains innocent until a court reveals otherwise. This declaration comes amid public scrutiny regarding Bello’s announcement to contest for the Kogi Central senatorial seat in 2027.
Bello faces prosecution for allegedly diverting ₦80.2 billion in state funds during his time as governor. EFCC Director of Public Affairs Wilson Uwuajeren emphasized that it is the court’s role to determine guilt or innocence, not the EFCC. He reiterated the constitutional principle of presumption of innocence, noting that Bello’s political status should not influence the ongoing trial.
Uwuajeren assured that the EFCC is focused on presenting evidence and witnesses, and the outcome will reflect the judicial process, independent of political affairs. He reiterated the agency’s commitment to ensuring fairness in the prosecution and stated that any actions regarding Bello’s political affiliations are separate from the EFCC’s mandate.
