The Federal Government has firmly dismissed reports alleging the existence of a secret task force aimed at unlawfully arresting or prosecuting opposition figures. In an official statement, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris referred to the claims as fabricated and misleading.
The controversy arose from a document circulating online that purportedly outlined a multi-agency task force named “ADP4VIP” (Arrest, Detain, Prosecute for Very Important Persons) targeting prominent opposition members, especially those associated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Idris emphasized that this document is entirely fictitious and that no such program exists.
“There is no such programme as ‘ADP4VIP,’” he asserted, highlighting that the Tinubu administration is committed to economic reforms, tackling insecurity, and restoring investor confidence.
The government accused some opposition members of mischaracterizing lawful accountability measures as political persecution in a bid to evade scrutiny from law enforcement. Framing anti-corruption efforts as political targeting, Idris warned, is a dangerous tactic intended to shield influential individuals from legal responsibility.
Reaffirming the government’s dedication to constitutional democracy and due process, he noted that Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution guarantees the right to free association and political engagement in Nigeria. He described President Tinubu as a committed democrat who is devoted to upholding the Constitution and its protections.
Idris stressed that law enforcement agencies and the judiciary operate independently, conducting their duties professionally and with the national interest in mind, free from political influence.
As the 2027 general elections approach, he urged Nigerians to be wary of misinformation and fake news. He warned that fabricated narratives are likely to intensify in an attempt to sow discord.
Idris encouraged citizens to reject what he termed “the politics of distortion and division,” assured that the government remains focused on delivering progress and tangible results for the nation.
