In a significant development aimed at enhancing the education sector, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has approved improved service conditions for teachers. Effective from August 1, 2025, the mandatory retirement age for teachers will be extended from 60 to 65 years, and the maximum years of service will increase from 35 to 40 years.

According to Commissioner of Information Ahmed Maiyaki, teachers assigned to rural and hard-to-reach communities will also receive a special allowance. This decision aligns with the Harmonised Retirement Age for Teachers Act, 2022, passed by the National Assembly, which recognizes the essential role of teachers in national development by exempting them from the usual retirement age.

A circular conveying this approval has been issued, directing relevant institutions to comply. Governor Sani emphasized that leveraging the experience of seasoned teachers is crucial for delivering quality education and sustaining positive learning outcomes.

“This policy honors years of dedicated service, retains invaluable experience in our classrooms, and motivates greater productivity for the benefit of our children and the future of Kaduna State,” said Maiyaki.

Governor Sani expressed confidence that this initiative will enhance teacher motivation, improve retention rates, and significantly raise educational standards across Kaduna State. The state government plans to issue detailed implementation guidelines shortly.

This step reflects the Governor’s ongoing commitment to improving workers’ welfare and investing in human capital development within the education sector.
