The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has clarified that its C-130 aircraft’s recent landing in Burkina Faso was precautionary due to a technical concern. The aircraft, which was on a ferry mission to Portugal, diverted to Bobo-Dioulasso after taking off from Lagos when the crew observed a potential problem.
Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, NAF’s Director of Public Relations, stated that the landing was made in accordance with international aviation protocols and standard safety procedures. Despite reports alleging that Burkinabe authorities detained 11 crew members for violating airspace regulations, Ejodame confirmed that all crew members are safe and have been treated well by local authorities.
The NAF expressed its gratitude to Nigerians for their support during this incident and reassured the public of its commitment to ensuring operational safety and compliance with protocols. Plans are reportedly being made to resume the journey as scheduled.
In contrast, the Alliance of Sahel States, which includes Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, criticized the emergency landing, labeling it an “unfriendly act” and asserting that the aircraft had been operating without permission in their airspace. They announced heightened alert status for their air forces and authorized measures to address any future violations.
