Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has reassured the public about Nigeria’s safety, saying he felt “perfectly safe” during his recent visit to the country.
Speaking at the Imo State Economic Summit 2025 in Owerri, Johnson addressed concerns about security that had emerged before his trip. He acknowledged reports warning him of potential risks but dismissed them, stating: “I want you to know that when I decided to come to Owerri… there were people saying, ‘there may be some security problems in Nigeria.’ And I said, ‘Well, I am going anyway.'”
He added that both he and attendees felt secure, emphasising confidence in the arrangements made by local authorities and organisers of the summit.
Johnson also praised Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma and the summit hosts for initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, including plans for 24-hour electricity and the adoption of technology-driven solutions such as artificial intelligence to boost economic growth.
During his address, Johnson highlighted Nigeria’s strong contributions to the UK in sectors such as oil, gas, entertainment, medical expertise, and technology, noting the deep cultural and professional ties between the two countries.
