President Bola Tinubu’s list of 65 ambassadorial nominees is set to face comprehensive scrutiny in the Senate Today. This process is viewed as necessary to ensure that Nigeria is represented by qualified individuals in international missions.
The Senate has indicated that the confirmation process will be more stringent than in the past, with plans to challenge the nominees on their qualifications and ability to represent Nigeria’s interests abroad. The list includes 34 career ambassadors and high commissioners and 31 non-career nominees, marking one of the largest diplomatic submissions in the current administration.
Among the notable nominees are Ambassadors Sulu-Gambari Olatunji Ahmed and Maimuna Ibrahim. Prominent non-career nominees include Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.) and Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (retd.). Senate President Godswill Akpabio referred the nominees to the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, with a mandate to conclude screenings and reports within a week.
The nomination of former INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu has sparked debate, particularly from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who argues that it could undermine public trust in Nigeria’s electoral integrity.
