The Senate has expressed its appreciation to President Bola Tinubu and security agencies for the successful rescue of numerous kidnapping victims in Kwara and Niger states. This commendation came following the adoption of a motion by Senator Asiru Yisa, addressing the urgent need to tackle growing insecurity in these regions.
Senator Yisa highlighted the recent attack on Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, which resulted in the death of two worshippers and the abduction of 38 individuals, all of whom have since been released. He raised serious concerns regarding a reported withdrawal of military personnel from a school in Kebbi just hours before a bandit attack, calling for an urgent investigation into the matter.
The Senate warned that internal collaborators may be assisting bandits, enabling criminal activities in areas like the Kwara–Kogi corridor and Kebbi–Zamfara route. Lawmakers also criticized the condition of certain highways, which have become escape routes for criminals, and reiterated the need for strengthened security in vulnerable communities.
In recognition of Tinubu’s proactive leadership, the Senate mandated the military and police to enhance intelligence-driven operations throughout the affected areas and proposed the formation of a Joint Task Force for the Kwara–Kogi corridor.
After observing a moment of silence for the victims, the Senate directed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and NEMA to provide necessary relief to impacted communities. Additionally, the chamber resolved to engage with international counterparts for support in combating terrorism and enhancing security measures.
