Saraki Urges PDP to Suspend National Convention, Calls for Caretaker Committee

Former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki has advised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to halt its planned national convention, which is set for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State, due to ongoing legal and political disputes surrounding the event.

In a statement made after a meeting with the PDP’s Board of Trustees Reconciliation Committee, Saraki emphasized the significance of resolving internal conflicts before proceeding with the convention. He expressed disappointment that, despite efforts by some party leaders to address internal issues, the convention has become mired in complexities that could threaten Nigeria’s democratic processes.

Saraki highlighted the potential risks posed by conflicting court orders, which could undermine the legitimacy of the convention’s outcomes. He stated that current uncertainties regarding the conduct and results of the convention could discourage serious political aspirants from participating.

As a remedy, Saraki urged the Board of Trustees to initiate the formation of a Caretaker Committee to manage the party’s affairs and restore stability. He believes this is essential for fostering confidence among party members and prospective candidates.

“The only viable solution is to establish the Caretaker Committee in the next two days,” he asserted, underscoring that such a move is crucial for reconciliation and reinforcing the party’s unity.

Saraki warned that moving forward with the convention in its planned format would likely exacerbate existing tensions and prove counterproductive. He asserted that no serious politician would risk contesting under the PDP’s banner without assurance regarding the validity of their nomination.

The situation within the PDP has worsened recently, with notable internal suspensions and counter-suspensions adding to the party’s turmoil. The National Working Committee, led by Acting Chairman Umar Damagum, had suspended National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu and others for alleged anti-party activities. In response, a faction led by Anyanwu deemed this action illegal and proceeded to suspend Damagum and several other NWC members, further deepening divisions.

Compounding the issue, a Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an order halting the convention based on procedural irregularities. Despite this ruling, the party’s leadership has indicated plans to go ahead with the event, claiming the court lacks jurisdiction in the matter.

Saraki’s call for a pause and a restructuring of the party’s management underscores the ongoing challenges the PDP faces as it tries to navigate internal strife and maintain its relevance in Nigeria’s political landscape.
