Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPoB), has once again asserted that he has no case to answer regarding the seven-count terrorism charge brought against him by the Federal Government. During court proceedings, Kanu, who is representing himself after dismissing his legal team, insisted that the charges lack a valid legal basis.

Kanu challenged the court’s jurisdiction, arguing that there is no existing law underpinning the charges against him. He requested his immediate release from detention, emphasizing that he should not be required to present a defense without a legitimate legal framework. Citing section 36(12) of the 1999 Constitution, he contended that the terrorism charges are not supported by current law, particularly after the repeal of the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act.

The prosecution, led by Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, argued that Kanu’s documents lacked probative value and sought to expedite the trial. However, Justice James Omotosho acknowledged the defendant’s lack of legal representation and granted him additional time to seek legal counsel.

The court adjourned proceedings, warning Kanu that failure to present his defense within the allotted time could result in forfeiting that right. Kanu’s case has drawn attention due to the serious nature of the charges, which include leading a separatist movement and inciting violence. Kanu has consistently denied all allegations against him.
