An undisclosed number of individuals are reportedly trapped following the collapse of a two-storey building in Lagos early on Monday. The incident occurred at 54 Cole Street, near Cemetery Bus Stop in the Oyingbo area.
Margaret Adeseye, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed the situation, noting that the building had previously shown signs of distress before giving way. The Sari-Iganmu Fire Station team was dispatched to the scene after receiving a distress call at around 12:20 a.m.
As rescue efforts continue, 15 individuals—including seven men, four women, and four children—have been rescued with varying degrees of injuries. They have been transported to medical facilities, including the Federal Medical Centre in Ebute-Metta and the General Hospital on Lagos Island.
Building collapses have become alarmingly frequent in Nigeria, particularly in Lagos, often attributed to weak regulatory enforcement, substandard materials, and inadequate inspections. Notable recent incidents include a high-rise building collapse in Ikoyi in November 2021, which claimed at least 42 lives, and a four-storey building collapse in Yaba in September 2025.
Rescue operations are still in progress as authorities work to address the situation and assist those affected.
