The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced the suspension of its two-week warning strike, allowing the Federal Government one month to finalize the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and address other unresolved issues affecting Nigeria’s university system.

ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, made the announcement during a press briefing in Abuja, noting that the decision followed productive discussions with the Federal Government and interventions from the National Assembly.

The warning strike was initially declared on October 13, 2025, due to the government’s neglect in addressing critical issues related to the 2009 agreement and other welfare concerns of university lecturers. Piwuna stated that the government’s engagement, led by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, included discussions on the renegotiated agreement, indicating significant progress had been made.

While not all objectives were met, Piwuna recognized improvements compared to the situation before the strike, attributing some progress to the mediation efforts of Senate Committees on Tertiary Education, TETFund, and Labour.

The National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU concluded that the warning strike achieved part of its purpose, compelling the government to negotiate. However, Piwuna warned that if the government fails to resolve outstanding issues within the month, the union may resume strike action without further notice.

He called on Nigerians to urge the government to fulfill its commitments to ensure stability in the academic calendar.
