The Federal Government is set to arraign human rights activist Omoyele Sowore on a five-count charge for allegedly posting false statements about President Bola Tinubu, intended to incite a breakdown of law and order. Sowore was seen at the Federal High Court in Abuja on September 30, 2025, ahead of his arraignment.
The charges stem from a post made on August 25, which Sowore allegedly refused to delete despite requests from the Department of State Services (DSS). The post criticized Tinubu’s claims about corruption in Nigeria, describing him as a “criminal.”
The legal action was initiated on behalf of the DSS by M.B. Abubakar, Director of Public Prosecutions, along with other counsel. Social media companies X Inc. and Meta Platforms Inc. are also listed as co-defendants.
Sowore has publicly stated his determination not to delete the controversial tweet, describing the charges as “novel” offenses invented by the government. He reaffirmed his commitment to attend court proceedings as the case unfolds.
