The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has reiterated its belief in the judiciary as the last hope for justice, despite perceived challenges within Nigeria’s judicial system. In a statement by spokesman Emma Powerful, titled “Justice Must Not Be Abducted: The World is Watching Omotosho’s Court,” the group emphasized the need for judicial independence and the rule of law, particularly regarding the trial of their leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

IPOB acknowledged the importance of decisions based on law and fact, especially in light of a recent Kenyan High Court ruling concerning Kanu’s return to Nigeria. The group raised concerns about jurisdiction, referencing the principle of double criminality, which requires that an alleged offense be recognized as a crime in both Nigeria and the country from which the accused was returned.

The statement highlighted the necessity of adhering to international legal norms during cross-border legal proceedings. While praising the professionalism of the presiding judge, IPOB called for fairness and adherence to the rule of law.

IPOB urged that legal processes be transparent and in line with both domestic and international legal standards, reiterating their demand for Kanu’s release based on their interpretation of existing legal provisions.
