In a mark of national respect, the Federal Government has declared Tuesday, 15th July 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who passed away on Sunday in the United Kingdom at the age of 82.

This announcement comes as part of the seven-day national mourning period declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in tribute to Buhari’s legacy and decades of service to Nigeria.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed the holiday declaration on Monday, following the President’s approval. He said the gesture was aimed at recognising Buhari’s contribution to Nigeria’s democratic development, national security, and public service.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” the minister stated. “This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”

Dr. Tunji-Ojo urged citizens to use the day to promote peace, unity, and patriotism—ideals the late president stood for throughout his lifetime.

As earlier announced, national flags are to be flown at half-mast across the country from Sunday, 13th July, for a period of seven days.

The Federal Government also extended heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and the entire nation, while praying for the peaceful repose of the former president’s soul.
