At least 27 farmers have been killed in a recent attack by gunmen in Bindi-Jebbu of the Tahoss community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State. The incident, which occurred on Monday, also resulted in numerous injuries, with many victims rushed to local hospitals, including the Jos University Teaching Hospital.
The chairman of Riyom LGA, Bature Sati Shuwa, confirmed the incident but could not provide a casualty figure as he was en route to the attacked area. Security agencies, including Operation Safe Haven and the state police command, have not released any statements regarding the attack.
Dalyop Solomon, the National President of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, confirmed the fatalities and reported that the assailants were suspected members of the Fulani ethnic group. He described the attack as brutal, with gunmen firing indiscriminately and setting homes ablaze.
According to Solomon, the bodies of the deceased have been taken to various hospitals for burial arrangements. The attack has reignited concerns over the ongoing security challenges in Plateau State, where armed groups have increasingly targeted communities.
The Berom Youth Moulders Association condemned the attack, attributing it to armed Fulani groups and criticizing the inaction of security forces despite prior knowledge of the planned assault. They expressed disappointment at the reinforcement team’s lack of action during the attack.
