The senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has urged former members of the Peoples Democratic Party to return and help reposition the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
She made the appeal while speaking at the inauguration of the PDP National Convention Committee in Abuja, stressing that the party needs the experience and contributions of those who previously left. According to her, rebuilding the PDP requires unity, institutional knowledge, and a shared commitment to national development.
Natasha expressed optimism that the event signals a fresh start for the party, despite its recent struggles. She pointed out that internal crises had significantly weakened the PDP’s presence in the Senate, reducing its numbers from 37 to just six lawmakers.
Encouraging defectors to reconsider their decisions, she noted that many left due to disagreements within the party but suggested that the alternatives may not be better. She reassured them that the PDP remains open and willing to welcome them back.
Also speaking at the event, the committee chairman, Okezie Ikpeazu, described the moment as critical for the party’s future. He acknowledged ongoing internal challenges but highlighted a recent appellate court ruling affirming the National Caretaker Working Committee as an opportunity for renewal.
Ikpeazu emphasized the need for genuine reconciliation among members, urging them to set aside differences and work together. He noted that rebuilding the party would require honesty, mutual respect, and a collective effort to move beyond past conflicts.
The calls for unity come as the PDP seeks to regain its footing and strengthen its position in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the next election cycle.
