The Ogun State Government has issued a flood alert for this year, urging residents of 26 flood-prone communities to relocate to safer areas ahead of the anticipated coastal flooding between September and November. This proactive measure aims to mitigate potential risks associated with the upcoming wet season.

During the Ministry of Environment’s Year 2025 Flood Alert briefing, Commissioner Ola Oresanya emphasized the importance of early relocation to protect lives. He noted that the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) have identified Ogun as one of Nigeria’s major flood-prone areas.

To address the flooding issue, the state government has undertaken significant infrastructure improvements over the past five years, including the de-silting of 988.3 km of rivers and streams and the construction of drainage systems. Oresanya stated that ongoing projects will continue to enhance the state’s resilience against flooding.

Residents in communities such as Ijebu-Ode, Abeokuta, and Sagamu are particularly advised to be vigilant regarding flash floods expected between March and July. The government is also coordinating with religious bodies and hotels to establish internally displaced persons (IDP) camps for those affected by potential flooding.

Oresanya reassured residents that the state government remains committed to maximizing the benefits of the rainy season for food production while ensuring safety and preparedness. He encouraged all stakeholders to collaborate in addressing the challenges posed by the rainy season.
